General entertainment channels account for 60% violations of content code and cable laws while news channels account for the rest. Also, with 12 instances of violations of cable laws on content in the last three years, Viacom18 Media, the promoter of channels like Colors, MTV and VH1, tops the list of broadcasters on which actions were taken by the government for violations.
Incidentally, the reality show Bigg Boss alone accounts for four violations, the maximum for a single show in recent times, shows data on content code violations furnished by the I&B ministry before Parliament. This is significant because Colors channel is currently fighting a legal battle with the I&B ministry over its notice directing it to push the time band of its reality show Bigg Boss 4 from 9 pm (prime time) to 11 pm (late night) due to abusive content. However, Colors on Monday got a further relief from the Bombay High Court regarding the telecast timing of Bigg Boss 4 and now the Salman Khan-hosted show will continue air at its 9 pm slot till December 3 when the case will be heard next.
