Xplan tops software rankings -Tops

Xplan has emerged as the highest rated planning application in the latest Investment Trends Planning Software Report, while Coin Office retained its top position for best modelling and State of Advice production functionality.

The Investment Trends Planning Software report, released this week, also revealed the degree to which dealer groups and financial planning firms are using the software as a planner productivity tool.

Investment Trends principal Mark Johnston noted that for the first time the planning applications had reported on what advisers actually do with their time.

He said the development of applications in 2009 focused on planner productivity, with functionality to help advisers work more efficiently and provide adviser organisations with tools to benchmark the productivity of their advisers.

Johnston said a key area of development for Australia’s leading planning application providers over the past year had been helping advisers to do more for clients with developers delivering on workflow functionality and the ability for advisers to work on multiple clients at once.

He said a new generation of client facing planning applications was being introduced, with the planning application functionality shifting from providing traditional planning tools to developing client-focused planning applications.

According to Investment Trends' final analysis and overall ratings, Xplan headed the list, followed by Coin Office, AdviserNETgain, VisiPlan and Navigator n-link.

Asgard’s AdviserNETgain was awarded best integrated planning/platform hybrid.

The combat is better, the side missions are much better, and this is arguably the most polished and relatively bug-free game that BioWare has ever produced. Little nitpicks and problems with the first game are long gone, and what you are left with is amazingly fun gameplay and a spectacular story with great characters and a complex and rich galaxy to explore. This is one of the best games on the Xbox 360.

3. Red Dead Redemption

Red Dead Redemption is an Old West-themed sandbox game where you'll ask yourself multiple times while you play "I wonder if I can do this ...", referring to some specific clichéd "Western" action, and more often than not you can. It has been lovingly crafted to not only mimic Western films, but real life in the West as well. The result is a fresh, incredibly detailed take on open world games that is surprisingly realistic and satisfying and just plain fun. This is the best open world game to come around in a long time.

I'll come right out and say it. Halo: Reach is easily the best Halo game yet. From the campaign to the multiplayer to the forge to Firefight, everything in Halo: Reach is uniformly polished and excellent. The gameplay is sharp and precise. The presentation is stunning. The wealth of content is impressive. You'll be playing this for months to come. There is no question that Bungie is going out on top with its final Halo game.

So long World War II. Hello modern warfare! Call of Duty has made the leap from the heroics of the greatest generation to a horrifying vision of the future in CoD4, and the results are pretty darn spectacular. The single-player campaign is filled with tight gameplay and great moments you’ll want to play again and again, and the multiplayer is some of the deepest and most satisfying around. Call of Duty 4 is a great game that is highly recommended.

7. Gears of War 2

Lead designer Cliff Bleszinski said months ago that Gears of War 2 was going to be “bigger, better, and more badass”, and now that we have spent some time with it we have to agree with him. This is a bigger and better game in every single aspect. The campaign feels more epic and is filled with jaw dropping moments. The multiplayer has been beefed up with new modes, and the addition of Horde mode as well as a training mode means that Gears 2 has plenty to offer both on and offline. This is simply a great game.

Crackdown mixes GTA-style “sandbox” gameplay with special abilities you’d usually only find in a Marvel superhero to create a game that actually stands out among the increasing number of GTA wannabes. It looks gorgeous, plays amazingly well, and is one of the most addictive and satisfying games around. Playing co-op over Xbox Live with friends is also an absolute treat that has made this game truly stand the test of time.

10. Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise

Back when I first saw the E3 2006 footage of Viva Piñata, I knew it was going to be a cult hit. There is something really intriguing about the Harvest Moon-meets-Animal Crossing-meets-Pokemon-meets-The Sims type of gameplay featured here. It looks amazing, is surprisingly deep, and is one of the most addictive games of the year. Don’t be fooled by the “kids game” look, Viva Piñata is a great game that is highly recommended for Xbox 360 gamers of any age.

Tech Companies Still Top the Green Charts

When Newsweek unveiled its first annual Green Rankings last year, we paid attention; the list was the most comprehensive attempt to rank major companies based on sustainability that we had seen. But, as we explained last year, the rankings are slightly flawed--some industries are simply dirtier than others, and sustainable companies that are secretive about environmental data (because of trade secrets, for example) automatically lose points. So how do the rankings measure up this year?

For the most part, the methodology behind the rankings remains the same. The 500 largest publicly held companies in the U.S. are ranked by their overall Green Score, which is the result of three component scores: the Environmental Impact Score (EIS), the Green Policies Score (GPS), and the Reputation Survey Score (RSS). But unlike last year, disclosure counts for 10% of a company's Environmental Impact Score. The rest comes from an overall environmental footprint. Perhaps more significantly, rankings were adjusted to take into account the environmental impact of investments by banks and financial service institutions--so companies can no longer separate themselves from their investments.

For the most part, these tweaks didn't affect the top companies. Dell, HP, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, and Intel are still in the top five, albeit in a different order. But some lower-ranked companies have made dramatic shifts. Kimberly-Clark, for example, jumped from 120 to 76--a much-deserved bump for the corporation.

One dramatic change this year: Newsweek now has a second listing for the 100 greenest global companies (incidentally, the Russian version of Newsweek just shuttered). Those rankings are a little different, with IBM, HP, Johnson & Johnson, Sony, and GlaxoSmithKline rounding out the top five. Dell and Intel didn't make it onto the list because of their relatively small size.

Do these rankings make a difference to these companies? Do they affect more than their reputation? They do. According to Greenbiz, the top 100 companies outperformed the Standard & Poor's 500 Index by 6.8% for the one year period ending September 1, 2010. In other words, the rankings prove that sustainability makes monetary sense.
